More about this title

About the Composer: Rodney Lamar Page

Rodney Lamar Page

Rodney Lamar Page grew up in Southfield, Michigan, where he began violin studies at age 10. He earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from Michigan State University, where he also developed significant piano skills during his undergraduate years.

Page spent his early career teaching music in Michigan public schools, including positions in the East Lansing and St. Johns districts. He later transitioned to work as a music clinician throughout Michigan, bringing his classroom experience and pedagogical insight to ensembles across the state. He currently lives in Lansing with his family.

Why we love this

Page writes with a clear understanding of what beginning orchestras can accomplish. Each section gets its own moment to shine with a memorable tune, keeping every stand engaged and invested in the performance rather than relegated to supporting harmony.

What to expect

Rustic Warriors captures a spirited, folk-like energy with memorable melodies that stick in your ear. The piece has warmth and motion without the complexity of intermediate repertoire, letting young players feel like accomplished musicians from the downbeat.

Who it's for

Beginning string orchestras at the first or second year of study will find this piece achieves real musicality without overwhelming emerging players. Directors looking for contest or festival material that builds technical foundations while maintaining audience appeal will recognize the value here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Isolate bow lifts in rehearsal before introducing the full piece. Have each section practice the lift pattern separately so transitions feel intentional rather than sloppy.
  • Balance the melody across sections as it passes from violins to violas to cellos and basses. Strengthen the accompaniment parts slightly so the featured melody always cuts through.
  • Keep the quarter- and eighth-note rhythms crisp and even. Use a steady tempo at rehearsal before letting the piece breathe naturally during performance.

How to use it

This works well as an opener or closer on a concert when you want to establish energy and ensemble confidence early. It also fits naturally into a contest set or festival program where judges appreciate clear, honest writing that showcases student progress without pretense.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing bow lifts between phrases
  • Reading and performing quarter- and eighth-note rhythms in coordinated sections
  • Responding to dynamic changes across the ensemble
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment roles within the same section
