John Kinyon studied at Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, earning an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. He spent decades working in music education as an instrumental director and department head, later serving as educational director for Warner Brothers Music in New York and as a professor of music education at the University of Miami, Florida.

Kinyon has become one of the most published composers of educational band music, with over 250 works released through Alfred. His catalogue spans Grade 1 through Grade 3, covering marches, ballads, and overtures across multiple styles. Since 1982, he has continued composing from his home in Tuckasegee, North Carolina.
