About the Composer: Mark Williams

Mark Williams

Mark Williams established himself as a prolific voice in school band composition, producing over 200 works performed by ensembles across North America and beyond. His influence extended through co-authorship of the Accent on Achievement Band Method, clinician visits to 34 states plus Canadian provinces and Australia, and a career spent teaching elementary band in Washington while maintaining active performance on bassoon and arranging for the 560th Air Force Band.

Throughout his career, Williams earned recognition including the Western International Band Clinic's Gralia Competition and multiple ASCAP Special Awards. Beyond the page, he served as Conductor and Artistic Director for the Spokane British Brass Band, bringing the same energy and musicality to live performance that characterizes his compositions for band, orchestra, and choir.

Why we love this

Williams knows exactly how to hook an audience in the first eight bars, and this fanfare does that in spades. The writing is energetic and direct without requiring technical wizardry from your students, making it an ideal opener that builds immediate concert momentum and gives young ensembles a genuine success experience.

What to expect

A burst of ceremonial grandeur that doesn't take itself too seriously. The fanfare sets a festive, energetic tone; there's no filler here, just bright brass writing and propulsive momentum that keeps audiences and performers engaged from start to finish.

Who it's for

Beginning to early intermediate band directors seeking a concert opener with immediate impact. This piece works especially well for elementary and early middle school bands still building fundamental ensemble skills but ready for something with personality and drive.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening fanfare with clear dynamic intention. The thrilling character depends on confident articulation and unified attacks across sections; use rehearsal time to lock the brass entrance together.
  • Maintain forward motion through the non-stop action. Resist the urge to slow down during transitions; keep the tempo driving so the piece's energy doesn't diffuse.
  • Balance the melodic line against supporting parts. At this level, students often play all parts with equal weight; remind them where the main idea lives and which voices provide color or movement.

How to use it

Open your next concert with this. Its Grade 1.5 accessibility and short duration make it perfect for setting the evening's tone without demanding extensive rehearsal resources, allowing you to move quickly into longer works while the audience is still settling in.

Skills your students will build

  • Brass section unity and articulation control
  • Concert band balance and ensemble cohesion
  • Maintaining steady tempo and rhythmic integrity in fanfare-style figures
  • Dynamic contrast and phrasing within straightforward melodic material
