About the Composer: Elizabeth Gilpatrick

Elizabeth Gilpatrick

Elizabeth Gilpatrick holds degrees in Music Education and Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, along with Orff certification from Northern Arizona University. She spent nearly three decades as a music specialist in Boulder Valley schools before moving into teacher training and composition.

Gilpatrick currently directs the Summer Orff Schulwerk Training programs at the University of Northern Colorado and serves on the faculty there. She has been a long-standing member of The Orff Echo editorial board and regularly clinics at All-State events and Orff workshops across the United States and Canada. Her work in children's choral music reflects deep roots in both classroom practice and Orff pedagogy.

Why we love this

Gilpatrick writes with genuine understanding of what young singers need to hear and sing. These rounds and partner songs build part-singing confidence without requiring elaborate arrangements or complex harmonic concepts, making them workable for K-5 classrooms where singers often have minimal prior experience. The collection's connection to holidays and seasons gives you immediate thematic anchors for programming throughout the year.

What to expect

Bright, accessible, and celebratory. These pieces embrace the rhythms and melodies of childhood while introducing the pleasure of singing in harmony. Each song connects to the calendar, grounding young singers in the seasons and holidays they experience, making music feel immediately relevant to their lives.

Who it's for

General music teachers and classroom instructors working with K-5 singers who are developing foundational ensemble skills. The collection serves singers with little to no choral experience and works equally well as a warm-up tool or as the centerpiece of a lesson focused on part-singing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with unison passages before introducing the second part, letting singers internalize the melody first.
  • Use hand signals or visual cues to mark the entry points for each group, especially when teaching rounds to younger singers.
  • Layer the parts gradually during rehearsal; bring in the second group only after the first group feels secure.
  • Encourage singers to listen to the other part while singing their own, which builds the ear for independence.

How to use it

Use individual pieces as warm-ups at the start of class to build listening and blending skills, or weave them into seasonal classroom concerts and school assemblies. The 88-page collection provides enough variety to support part-singing instruction across an entire year, working naturally into units on holidays and seasonal themes.
