About the Composer: Ralph Ford

Ralph Ford has spent nearly three decades on university faculties while building an expansive catalog of original compositions and arrangements. His work spans orchestral, concert band, jazz, and marching ensemble contexts, with over 250 titles in circulation globally through his exclusive publishing relationship with the Belwin division of Alfred Music.
Beyond academic life, Ford has worked extensively in broadcast, media production, and commercial music, contributing jingles, news packages, and audio for television and radio. He began arranging professionally at fifteen and earned his Master of Science degree in 1988 while teaching at the university level. His compositions have been premiered by university, military, professional, and school ensembles internationally.
Why we love this
Romanza delivers the musical substance young bands crave without overwhelming their technical abilities. Ford writes genuine melody here, supported by orchestration that teaches balance and voice independence without requiring advanced facility, making this an ideal choice for bands developing their foundation in expressive, ensemble-centered playing.
What to expect
Romanza unfolds with the warmth of a ballad for young ears, full of plush harmonies that give every section of the band something singing to contribute. The score breathes with space and gentleness, inviting players to listen as much as they perform.
Who it's for
Grade 2 concert bands ready to move beyond purely rhythmic or technical work into genuine musical expression. This score suits ensembles with solid fundamentals and directors seeking to deepen students' understanding of balance, voicing, and sustained musicianship.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape each phrase with a clear narrative arc rather than treating the score as a series of dynamic markings. Let your ensemble understand where the melody wants to breathe and resolve.
- Isolate the harmonic structure in sectional rehearsals to establish how supporting voices sit beneath the primary voice. This reveals opportunities for the kinds of dynamic shadings the score invites.
- Conduct with a lighter hand in the quieter passages. Young bands often press too hard when restraint creates more expressive power.
- Balance the thicker textures by reinforcing the melodic line without letting it overshadow the harmonic voices that give the piece its richness.
How to use it
Romanza works beautifully in the middle of a concert program, offering a moment of repose between more energetic selections and giving audiences a chance to hear your band's musicianship rather than its speed. Its compact length and straightforward pedagogy make it ideal for festival or contest play early in the season, when you can build band cohesion around its expressive demands.
Skills your students will build
- Balance between melody and harmonic voices in thickly scored textures
- Shaping phrases and controlling dynamic swells with musicality rather than mechanics
- Listening across the ensemble to achieve unified ensemble tone
- Reading and responding to articulation and expression markings in context
