The suggested instrumentation and a customizable Teacher Map will help you plan out how to best assign parts to suit your ensemble's needs. It also comes with supplemental parts for maximum flexibility. With the purchase of this piece, permission is granted to photocopy the parts as needed for your ensemble. A percussion accompaniment track is also available as a free download. String parts have been carefully edited with extra fingerings and appropriate bowings to support students in mixed ensembles playing in less familiar keys.

Rock This Band!, by Robert Sheldon, has a catchy bass line and handclaps start the piece, then the melody joins in, followed by a countermelody---and this all happens using only the first six notes the students have learned! (2:00) (Correlates with Sound Innovations, Book 1, Level 2).

More about this title

About the Composer: Robert Sheldon

Robert Sheldon

Robert Sheldon stands among the most frequently performed composers in the wind band repertoire today. His works have been heard in concert halls from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, and his music appears regularly on state and national contest lists. He has received major awards from the American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and ASCAP, and was honored with a doctorate from VanderCook College of Music in 2020.

Beyond composing, Sheldon serves as the lead author of Sound Innovations for Concert Band and maintains an active schedule as guest conductor for honor bands and clinician at universities and state music education conferences across the United States and internationally. His work in Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, and China has shaped how young musicians worldwide engage with contemporary band literature.

Why we love this

Sheldon designed this piece specifically for beginners using only the first six pitches students learn, yet the arrangement avoids any sense of limitation by layering a catchy bass line, handclaps, melody, and countermelody into something genuinely engaging. The HybridNOW format eliminates the guesswork of mixed instrumentation: the customizable Teacher Map and supplemental parts let you activate whatever instruments walk into your rehearsal without retooling the whole piece.

What to expect

Contemporary and accessible, with an easy-to-remember bass line and rhythm that feels organic rather than mechanical. The piece breathes like pop or rock music even though it uses only six pitches, creating genuine musical satisfaction for students who might otherwise tire of fundamentals-only repertoire.

Who it's for

This is built for any beginning band director managing mixed instrumentation in small or large ensembles. Whether your class includes string players, woodwinds, brass, and percussion in any combination, the flexible scoring and Teacher Map let you assign parts based on your actual roster rather than ideal instrumentation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the handclap groove as the rhythmic anchor before bringing in melody voices; this gives the piece its contemporary energy and helps all sections lock together.
  • Balance the countermelody so it complements rather than overwhelms the main tune; younger students often need reminding that supporting lines are melodic too, not just filler.
  • Use the click track version during rehearsals to build steady time, then switch to the accompaniment without click to develop confidence before performance.
  • Emphasize the bass line as the foundation; a strong, clean bass makes the whole ensemble sound more mature and gives wind players clear harmonic grounding.

How to use it

Open an autumn concert with this piece to signal that your band plays music students recognize as contemporary and fun. It pairs well with other Sound Innovations repertoire in a progressive recital, or stands alone as a show-opening crowd-pleaser that builds audience connection before more advanced works.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing rhythmic syncopation (especially the handclap figure)
  • Listening for and blending multiple melodic lines simultaneously
  • Maintaining steady pulse in a contemporary rhythmic context
  • Performing with confidence using a limited pitch set
  • Responding to flexible instrumentation without loss of musical integrity
  • String-specific fingerings and bowings in ensemble mixed-key contexts
