About the Composer: JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall is a Texas-based composer and educator who earned degrees in music education from the University of North Texas and Texas State University. His training spans performance (tuba and trombone), conducting, and composition under respected mentors including Don Little, Dr. Nicholas Williams, and Dr. Jack Wilds. Hall served eight years as a band director, guiding his students to consistent sweepstakes awards and state recognition, including a historic Citation of Excellence for a middle school non-varsity band in Frisco ISD.

As a performer, Hall has appeared with ensembles ranging from the North Texas Wind Symphony to the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps and the 2014 Disneyland All-American College Band. A four-time Texas All-State Band member, he earned the distinction of principal tuba and 1st-chair jazz bass trombone at the state level. His compositions have been published on the Texas Prescribed Music List, selected for the J.W. Pepper "Editor's Choice" list, and recognized on the Bandworld Top 100 list, including the 2021 Barbara Buehlman Prize for his grade 2 concert band work "Through the Storm."

Why we love this

Hall writes funk with genuine authority. The groove is authentic enough to hold a student musician's attention for the full 2:40, and the melodic hook lands immediately and sticks. You'll find the parts are playable at Grade 3 without sacrificing the swag that makes this chart irresistible to both your ensemble and an audience.

What to expect

Infectious and charismatic. The groove pulls you in immediately with a punchy bass line and rhythmic precision, while the melody floats over the top with memorable flair and personality. This is funk that feels current and fun without asking your band to pretend they're something they're not.

Who it's for

Directors seeking a high-energy concert piece that engages student musicians and audiences alike. Grade 3 bands with solid fundamentals and a rhythm section that can commit to a tight groove will shine with this chart.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the articulation on the main groove. The rhythm section especially needs sharp, together tonguing to lock in that funk feel; a loose attack will deflate the whole vibe.
  • Balance the bass line prominently. This is the foundation of the funk, so resist the urge to bury the low brass and low woodwinds under upper voices.
  • Let the soloist breathe and own their moment. The memorable melody deserves space and confidence; encourage the lead voice to bring character and attitude to their line.
  • Rehearse the transition into and out of the groove section. Switching between strict time and any looser phrasing requires clarity so the band knows exactly when to lock back in.

How to use it

Program this for a concert's lighter section or as a finale that sends the audience out energized. It pairs well alongside more traditional concert fare, offering a refreshing change of pace that showcases your band's versatility and student enthusiasm.

Skills your students will build

  • Funk groove articulation and rhythmic precision
  • Balancing melody against a driving bass line
  • Locking in tight with a rhythm section
  • Maintaining groove consistency over repeated sections
  • Stylistically informed phrasing and attitude
