About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and developed deep roots in choral music through her work as an accompanist at North Texas State University. Her career has spanned composing and arranging across multiple genres and instruments, from choral works to piano solos, handbells, and vocal pieces. She has mentored students of all ages in both piano and composition throughout her professional life.

Courtney's prolific output has earned her recognition through multiple ASCAP Plus Awards. By 2009, she had published 100 titles; by 2017, that number had grown to over 350. She studied under the direction of Mark Hayes, a Dove Award winner, and has worked in both traditional and contemporary church music settings. She currently resides in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney brings a lyrical sensibility to SATB writing that honors both singers and audiences. Her gift for craft shows in accessible voicing that doesn't sacrifice musical substance, making this piece equally rewarding to rehearse and to perform.

What to expect

River of Imagination flows with a sense of openness and possibility. The music moves with natural grace, inviting singers into a landscape of harmonic warmth and lyrical beauty that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Who it's for

SATB choirs of mixed abilities looking for rewarding contemporary choral repertoire. The piece works well for community choirs, church ensembles, and school groups seeking music that is both musically substantial and genuinely engaging for singers.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the four voices so that the melodic line remains clear without burying inner parts; the piano accompaniment will anchor harmonic support.
  • Pay attention to phrase shaping in longer lines; mark breath points collaboratively with your singers to preserve musical momentum.
  • Work dynamics as a section first, then blend them as a choir so that individual voices contribute to the whole rather than standing apart.

How to use it

This piece fits naturally into secular choral concerts, especially when you're looking to balance your program with contemporary American choral writing. It works equally well as a concert opener or as part of a thematic program exploring imagination, creativity, or natural imagery.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing individual voice lines within harmonic texture
  • Sustained legit singing across longer phrases
  • Dynamic control and ensemble blend
  • Responding to the piano accompaniment while maintaining choral independence
