About the Arranger: Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker

Emily Crocker spent 15 years teaching music in Texas public schools across all grade levels before joining Hal Leonard in 1989. Her trajectory at the publishing house culminated in a VP position overseeing choral publications, a role she held until her 2017 retirement after three decades with the company.

Beyond her publishing career, Crocker founded and directed the Milwaukee Children's Choir from 1994 to 2009, later establishing the Vocal Arts Academy of Milwaukee from 2009 to 2015. Her choral compositions and arrangements have reached audiences worldwide, earning recognition for pedagogically sound, musically engaging instructional materials. She now lives in Fort Worth, Texas, where she continues composing and championing the arts.

Why we love this

Crocker's instincts as a classroom teacher shine throughout this arrangement. She balances the spiritual's emotional weight with practical voicing that gives every singer a musical moment, and the spiritual material itself brings authentic cultural substance to your concert while remaining accessible for developing ensembles.

What to expect

The arrangement captures the quiet determination and hope embedded in this spiritual, moving through the text with direct simplicity that lets the melody and message speak. There is both dignity and warmth here, a sense of purpose that resonates in the harmony without ever becoming sentimental.

Who it's for

TB, TTB, TBB, and TTBB choirs looking to add a spiritual with cultural integrity to their repertoire. This arrangement works for developing male ensembles through professional groups seeking concert programming with substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Approach the harmonies with careful attention to blend in the inner voices; the TB voicing requires consistent tone matching across parts to achieve the warmth this spiritual deserves.
  • Shape the text expressively by treating each phrase as part of a larger musical arc rather than isolated vocal gestures, allowing the message to unfold naturally.
  • Consider using a recorded accompaniment if available, which can lock in ensemble confidence while you focus on deepening interpretation and balance.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals or sacred works for a thematic concert segment, or use it as a contrasting piece in a diverse choral program to showcase your ensemble's range and ability to handle repertoire with cultural resonance. The nine pages give you something substantial without overwhelming a concert's time constraints.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing spirituals with stylistic awareness and respect for cultural tradition
  • Building blend across multiple parts with limited voicing
  • Shaping longer phrases in a primarily unaccompanied or accompanied texture
  • Expressing text meaning through harmonic and melodic nuance
