About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades as a composer, conductor, and educator. Recognized annually by ASCAP since 1987 for her contributions to music, she has published more than 600 choral works alongside 75 larger-scale musicals and songbooks. Her conducting has been featured at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, where she has led honor choirs and festival ensembles across the country.

Albrecht spent much of her career directing school choral and vocal publications for leading educational publishers, including Alfred Music, while teaching at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. She holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumna Award from both institutions. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she continues to live in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht's treatment of this spiritual brings warmth and accessibility without sacrificing musicality. The arrangement sits comfortably for mixed choirs of varying ability levels while maintaining the dignity and power of the traditional melody, making it a reliable choice for holiday programs that balance congregational familiarity with fresh interpretation.

What to expect

Rise Up, Shepherd carries the quiet urgency and hope of a traditional spiritual, grounded in an African American musical legacy. Albrecht's arrangement respects that heritage while creating moments of harmonic richness that deepen the emotional impact of the familiar melody.

Who it's for

This octavo suits mixed choirs at the intermediate level and above, from high school through community and church ensembles. Directors seeking a sacred work with strong audience recognition and manageable voice ranges will find this particularly useful for holiday concerts and seasonal services.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully during harmonic moments so the traditional melody remains the clear focal point, especially in SATB passages where lower voices move independently.
  • Let the recorded accompaniment establish a steady, unhurried tempo; resist the urge to rush through phrases, which can undermine the spiritual's reflective character.
  • Shape phrases by thinking through the text meaning rather than cadential points alone; this grounds the performance in the shepherd's plea and gives singers emotional purpose.

How to use it

Program this as a centerpiece in a Christmas concert's sacred section, or pair it with other spirituals for a meditative set. Its moderate length and accessibility make it ideal for mid-winter programs when rehearsal time is limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing a familiar melody against moving inner voices
  • Singing spirituals with stylistic authenticity and cultural respect
  • Working with recorded accompaniment for blend and rhythmic precision
