More about this title

About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner grew up in Chicago and studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He spent three decades as a high school music director and administrator before dedicating himself fully to composition in the early 2000s.

Since 1973, Wagner has published more than 3,500 compositions across nearly every medium: concert band, choir, orchestra, handbell ensemble, organ, piano, and voice. His work has been performed in concert halls and broadcast on radio and television throughout the United States and internationally, with over seventeen million copies in circulation. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner writes novelty pieces that don't condescend to young players or audiences. The humor here is genuine and the musical writing is clean enough that your beginning band can sound confident while delivering something genuinely entertaining. This is the kind of opener or closer that reminds audiences why live music matters.

What to expect

Playful chaos with a heartbeat. The electric pencil sharpeners bring the character and mischief, while the band supports with straightforward, accessible writing that lets everyone breathe and enjoy the moment.

Who it's for

Beginning concert band ensembles (Grade 1) looking for repertoire that builds confidence while entertaining. Directors seeking a piece that engages both young musicians and family audiences without sacrificing musical integrity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the featured soloists (the electric pencil sharpeners) take ownership of their character work; their confidence will set the tone for audience engagement.
  • Balance the ensemble support behind the soloists so they remain the clear focal point without drowning in accompaniment.
  • Use the provided recording as a rehearsal reference, but encourage your band to develop their own rhythmic phrasing and personality in the ensemble passages.

How to use it

Perfect as an opener to establish a lighter, more approachable tone for a concert, or as a closer that leaves audiences smiling. The two-minute runtime and Grade 1 difficulty make it ideal for a young band's first full concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble balance and blend in support roles
  • Confidence in performing straightforward rhythmic and melodic material
  • Responding to featured soloists with appropriate musical accompaniment
  • Reading a full conductor score and individual parts in concert band format
