About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober holds degrees in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Her teaching background spans two decades in public schools, university instruction, and private studio work, along with active service as a church pianist and music director. She studied with renowned teachers including Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich (piano), Mary Hoffman (music education), and Tony Caramia (jazz).

Bober's compositional voice reflects her deep commitment to nurturing students' musical growth. Her pieces balance technical challenge with emotional accessibility, and she is recognized across North America as both an innovative composer and sought-after clinician at piano teacher conventions and workshops. She lives in Minnesota with her husband Jeff.

Why we love this

Bober writes with genuine understanding of what intermediate pianists can accomplish and what they find rewarding. The combination of hand-crossings and arpeggiated accompaniment gives students real technical work without overwhelming the musicality, and the harmonic language feels contemporary yet accessible enough to encourage expressive playing from the start.

What to expect

The piece evokes a reflective, nostalgic quality supported by warm harmonic colors. An uplifting sentiment emerges through the interplay of the expressive melody and the carefully crafted accompaniment, creating a sense of both introspection and quiet optimism.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to explore expressive playing and hand independence will find this piece engaging. The technical demands are clear but not excessive, making it ideal for students preparing for recitals or those building confidence in performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map out the hand-crossings in advance and practice them slowly with both hands separate before bringing them together; rushing this passage will derail the overall pacing
  • Shape the arpeggiated accompaniment with subtle dynamic layering to create harmonic depth without overwhelming the melody
  • Let the expressive melody breathe naturally; the underlying harmonic richness supports introspection, not urgency

How to use it

Program this as a solo recital piece that stands well on its own or as part of a set exploring contemporary intermediate repertoire. It works particularly well in a concert where you want to showcase students' ability to balance technical execution with emotional communication.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand-crossing coordination and independence
  • Arpeggiated accompaniment control and evenness
  • Expressive phrasing and dynamic shaping
  • Harmonic awareness and color in contemporary contexts
