About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades through her prolific output of more than 600 choral publications, countless larger works for stage, and consistent recognition from ASCAP as a Special Music Award recipient since 1987. Her career spans conducting honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, alongside significant editorial leadership at major educational music publishers where she shaped the direction of school choral and vocal literature.

Albrecht's academic foundation spans music and theater, with degrees from Rollins College, the University of Miami Frost School of Music (both M.A. and M.M.), and faculty experience at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her collaboration with composer and arranger Jay Althouse has produced distinctive works that blend musicality with engaging staging and movement. She serves as a national clinician and has received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami and Rollins College.

Why we love this

Albrecht's work with choral movement is legendary, and this piece leverages her distinctive gift for pairing engaging choreography with solid vocal writing. The combination of novelty charm and genuine musical content means your singers stay engaged while learning something real. Holiday programs need humor and theatrical flair; this delivers both without sacrificing choir credibility.

What to expect

Playful and spirited, with the mischievous energy of something unexpected happening on a winter rooftop. The combination of novelty subject matter and Albrecht's accessible harmonic language creates a piece that feels fun to sing while remaining musically satisfying.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs seeking a holiday piece that balances entertainment value with legitimate musical content. This works equally well for concert choirs wanting a lighter moment or for show choirs and theatrical programs that prioritize movement and staging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Invest time in the staging during early rehearsals. The movement and choreography are central to the piece's effectiveness, not an afterthought, so block it as you would a scene in a musical rather than adding it in the final weeks.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to lock the rhythm section's groove, then gradually reduce your reliance on it as the choir gains confidence with the style and energy.
  • Keep the comedic timing intentional. The novelty humor lands only when singers deliver lines with focus and specificity, not when they're winking at the audience.

How to use it

Place this strategically in your holiday concert to create a tonal shift from traditional carols or more serious seasonal pieces. The movement and staging make it an ideal contrast point that energizes your audience while giving singers a chance to show their theatrical range alongside their vocal skills.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating vocal line with choreography and blocking
  • Delivering dialogue and humor with musical intention
  • Maintaining ensemble cohesion during staged movement
  • Interpreting contemporary secular holiday material
