Description
Redshift occurs when an object emitting light or other electromagnetic radiation is moving away from an observer. Those waves are shifted toward the red end of the spectrum, like the light waves astronomers measure when studying the most distant galaxies. The melodies in this piece tend to move away directionally from a central point, but in this case the "gravity" of the central note is too strong, and eventually pulls them back again. Todd Stalter

Todd Stalter built a 34-year legacy as Director of Bands at Eureka High School in Illinois, where his ensembles earned widespread recognition including 16 Class 1A state marching championships and consistent Superior ratings at IHSA contests. His bands performed at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Walt Disney World, and he was inducted into the Illinois State Marching Band Championships Hall of Fame. Beyond the high school podium, Stalter has guest-conducted All-State Bands in Georgia and Delaware, led regional honor bands, and appeared with professional ensembles including the Rockford Wind Ensemble and Prairie Winds.

As a composer, Stalter has established a significant catalog of works for band and string orchestra that circulate nationally and appear on state contest lists throughout the United States. Several of his band compositions are featured in the "Teaching Music Through Performance in Band" series published by GIA. He holds degrees from Illinois State University, including a bachelor's degree in music education (cum laude) and a master's degree in trumpet performance, and has maintained an active schedule as both adjudicator and clinician for state and regional music education associations.
