More about this title

About the Composer: Jennifer Linn

Jennifer Linn

Jennifer Linn brings three decades of teaching experience to her prolific output as a composer and arranger. She has written over 300 works for piano students across multiple publishers, including Alfred, G. Schirmer, Hal Leonard, and Music Sales America. Her expertise extends across the full spectrum of music education: private studio instruction spanning all age groups, university-level piano pedagogy, and clinician work that has taken her throughout the United States, Canada, and India.

Linn's credentials reflect her standing in both performance and education. She earned her B.M. with distinction and M.M. in piano performance from the UMKC Conservatory of Music, where she won the Concerto-Aria competition and received the Vice Chancellor's award for academic excellence and service. During her decade with Hal Leonard as Manager of Educational Piano, she shaped materials for countless students. In 2013, UMKC named her Alumni of the Year; in 2020, she received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

Why we love this

Linn writes for the student mind, building technique through musical interest rather than mechanical exercises. The title signals its character without pretense, and the two-page length makes it accessible for mid-level pianists while remaining musically substantial enough to hold a student's focus and reward careful practice.

What to expect

Warm, imaginative, and gently exploratory. The piece invites the student into a musical world that feels approachable yet offers real substance to discover with repeated hearings.

Who it's for

Intermediate piano students working toward confidence with longer forms and more refined musical expression. This suits anyone ready to move beyond short etudes and simple pieces but not yet tackling advanced classical repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the overall sound by voicing the harmonic layers clearly; the piece should sing as a cohesive unit rather than a melody supported by accompaniment.
  • Shape the phrasing with gentle direction toward structural points rather than playing through with even weight throughout.
  • Let the tempo breathe naturally; a rigidly metronomic approach flattens the lyrical quality Linn builds into the harmonic movement.

How to use it

Use this as a recital anchor piece for an intermediate student, or cluster several Linn compositions together in a student showcase to highlight compositional variety. It also serves well as a bridge between classical forms and contemporary educational writing.

Skills your students will build

  • Legato pedaling and sustain technique
  • Reading and executing dynamic shaping across longer phrases
  • Voice leading awareness in harmonic progressions
  • Tonal color differentiation between accompaniment and melodic material
