Description
Use this work in place of a concert march in your next performance. Centering around a ragtime theme, this lighter selection also provides opportunities for the band to stomp their feet. Very easy to put together and reinforce basic rhythmic concepts at this level.

He also composed music for the 1991 motion picture Waiting for the Light.

Why we love this

Sebesky captures the rhythmic energy of ragtime without overwhelming young musicians. The foot-stomping element transforms passive listeners into engaged performers, and the straightforward orchestration makes the piece transparent enough for students to hear how their individual parts fit into the larger texture.

What to expect

Bouncy and infectious, with the kind of propulsive energy that makes audiences smile. The foot-stomping brings the audience into the spirit of the piece and reminds everyone that concert band music can be joyful and playful.

Who it's for

Grade 1 bands that need a high-energy alternative to traditional march repertoire. This works especially well for ensembles ready to tackle syncopated rhythms but not yet prepared for complex harmonic language.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the ragtime groove in sectional rehearsals before bringing the full band together; the syncopation needs to feel natural rather than labored at this level.
  • Have students mark their foot-stomp passages clearly in their parts during the first read-through so there's no confusion about when they're playing and when they're adding the rhythmic accent.
  • Conduct with clear, confident beats that let the syncopation sit comfortably on top of the pulse rather than fighting it.
  • Bring out the ragtime theme in whoever carries it (likely cornets or clarinets) by keeping the harmonic accompaniment slightly lighter in volume.

How to use it

Consider this as your pops concert opener or midsection energy boost when you want to shift away from the formality of a traditional march. It also works well paired with other early-20th-century Americana in a thematic concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Syncopated rhythm reading and execution
  • Understanding ragtime articulation and phrasing
  • Rhythmic precision across different sections simultaneously
  • Breath control and phrasing in a fast-moving, lighter style
