About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped piano education for decades through her work as a composer and clinician at Alfred Music Publishing, where she joined in 1989. Her educational repertoire spans multiple styles and difficulty levels, with particular strengths in jazz, ragtime, blues, and Romantic impressionism. She brings real classroom experience to her writing, having maintained a private piano studio in Lake City, Florida for many years while remaining active as an accompanist and church musician.

Mier's credentials run deep within the music education community. She holds state and national certification through MTNA, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers, and she regularly presents workshops and adjudicates at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and MTA state conventions internationally. Over 200 of her publications, including co-authorship of Alfred's Premier Piano Course, have been selected for inclusion in the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival Bulletin.

Why we love this

Mier writes ragtime that feels authentic without requiring professional-level technical command. The 4-page length makes it approachable for intermediate students while the genre itself brings genuine style and personality to a practice routine, which matters when you're trying to keep students engaged with their lessons.

What to expect

Spirited and playful, with the syncopated bounce that defines ragtime. There's a touch of nostalgia woven through, but the piece stays light and forward-moving, never heavy.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to move beyond classical and contemporary styles into a historically rooted popular genre. This works well for students who respond to character and style variation, or who benefit from the rhythmic and coordination challenges ragtime presents at this level.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the bounce feel early by practicing the left hand alone, letting it swing slightly rather than land rigidly on each beat.
  • Separate melodic phrases by lifting slightly between them, which preserves the light, dance-like character ragtime demands.
  • Work the rhythmic syncopations slowly at first, then gradually increase tempo only once the left hand anchors the pulse reliably.
  • Balance the right-hand melody against the left-hand accompaniment so the top voice carries without drowning out the ragtime groove underneath.

How to use it

Slot this into a student recital program where you want a style change from classical or contemporary selections, or pair it with other pieces from Mier's Jazz, Rags & Blues series to create a thematic block. It works equally well as a solo feature or as part of a mixed-genre evening.

Skills your students will build

  • Syncopated rhythm reading and execution in ragtime context
  • Left-hand accompaniment patterns (stride and ragtime bass figures)
  • Coordination between independent melodic and rhythmic ideas
  • Period style recognition and appropriate articulation choices
  • Tempo stability under rhythmic complexity
