About the Composer: Alice Parker

Alice Parker's career spans decades of rigorous study, collaboration, and prolific composition. She trained at Smith College and Juilliard, where she formed a transformative partnership with Robert Shaw that resulted in hundreds of settings of American folksongs, hymns, and spirituals now sung by choruses internationally. Her output exceeds five hundred published works across operas, cantatas, song cycles, and individual choral pieces.

Parker's deepest commitment has always been to melody itself. In 1985, she established MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC., an organization dedicated to exploring the heart of vocal music through composition, teaching, and advocacy. She authored influential books on melodic styles, choral improvisation, and church music, including the 2010 Melodious Accord Hymnal and the 2013 second edition of her essays on song leading and congregational singing. Her contributions to American choral music earned her the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association (2013), the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal (2015), Distinguished Composer of the Year from the American Guild of Organists (2000), and six honorary doctorates.
