About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens brings three decades of classroom experience to his prolific composing career. A VanderCook College of Music graduate, he has created over 300 works for concert band, string orchestra, and chamber ensembles since 1993, earning recognition from the American Bandmasters Association, ASCAP, and his alma mater as a Distinguished Alumnus.

Owens' compositions are known for their practical musicality and accessibility to young ensembles without sacrificing musical substance. His works appear on required music lists across North America and have become repertoire standards in bands nationwide. He served 30 years as a band director in Texas before retiring in 2014 and now resides in Fort Worth with his wife Georgia.

Why we love this

Owens captures the sheer energy of a galop without requiring virtuosic technique from every section. The infectious melody and sweeping technical passages give advanced intermediate bands a chance to sound ambitious while the flexible tempo marking lets you shape the piece to match your ensemble's strengths and your concert vision.

What to expect

Quicksilver bounces with infectious joy and unbridled momentum. The sweeping technical passages create moments of dazzling brilliance, while the memorable melody captures the spirited energy of a vintage circus parade. This is music that makes audiences smile and gives your musicians a reason to practice.

Who it's for

Band directors programming Grade 3.5 to 4 ensembles who want a showpiece with genuine musical substance. Musicians at this level appreciate the technical challenge and the straightforward fun of galop writing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Settle on a tempo in rehearsal and stay consistent; the whimsical character depends on precise rhythmic execution across the ensemble, particularly in the technical passages.
  • Balance the melody prominently so the "highly infectious" character cuts through; Owens writes it in a way that rewards crisp articulation and clear phrasing.
  • Treat the circus-style idiom as an invitation to character, not caricature. Precision and energy work better than exaggeration.
  • Experiment with both tempos during early rehearsals to find where your band feels most confident. Either approach will serve the music well.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a mid-concert pick-me-up that shifts the energy and mood after a more serious selection. Its accessible difficulty and crowd-pleasing character make it ideal for pops concerts, spring programs, or any context where you want your band to shine with confidence and wit.

Skills your students will build

  • Coordinating fast articulation across multiple sections
  • Balancing technical passages with lyrical phrasing
  • Responding to flexible tempo and expressive interpretation
  • Rhythmic precision in quick galop rhythm patterns
