About the Arranger: Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina

Jill and Michael Gallina have built a career writing music and musical theatre specifically for young singers in grades K through 12. Their work has earned recognition from the Parents Choice Foundation, American Library Service, and ASCAP, and has appeared on major platforms including The Disney Channel, PBS, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and performances by The New York Philharmonic and Boston Pops. Jill holds a B.A. in music from the College of New Jersey and spent years teaching elementary music before transitioning to full-time composition.

Michael brings additional credentials with both a B.A. and M.A. in music from the College of New Jersey, plus a doctorate in administration and supervision from Rutgers University. His background as an elementary school principal in New Jersey informed his understanding of what young singers need. Together, the Gallinas have sold millions of copies of their choral works and see thousands of performances of their musical plays annually across the English-speaking world. They remain active educators, leading workshops for music teachers and continuing to compose music that engages and inspires students.

Why we love this

This octavo tackles a fundamental pedagogical challenge: helping young singers internalize rhythmic values through music that actually engages them rather than feels like drill work. The Gallinas have designed something that teaches while it delights, making it ideal for choirs that need reinforcement in basic rhythm reading without sacrificing musicality or interest.

What to expect

Direct and clear. The music removes distractions and lets the rhythm values speak for themselves, creating a sense of discovery as singers notice how a whole note really does sustain four times longer than a quarter note. There is honest pedagogical purpose woven into every measure.

Who it's for

Elementary and middle school choirs looking for repertoire that teaches fundamental rhythm concepts without feeling like a worksheet set to music. This works equally well for beginning high school singers who need to solidify their understanding of note duration before tackling more complex meters.

How to get the most out of it

  • Give singers multiple chances to isolate and sing just the quarter notes, then halves, then wholes across different sections so they develop kinesthetic awareness of how long each value sustains.
  • Record your choir singing it early in rehearsals and play it back; hearing themselves reinforces the rhythmic concepts in a way that lecture or conducting alone cannot.
  • Layer in body percussion or simple conducting patterns to anchor the longer note values visually and physically, especially helpful for younger singers still building internal pulse.

How to use it

Use this early in the fall as part of your first rehearsals to establish strong rhythmic foundations across your ensemble, or revisit it in January as a refresher before tackling more rhythmically complex literature. It also works as a warm-up or pedagogical opener on a concert focused on musicianship building.

Skills your students will build

  • Accurate performance of quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes in proper proportion
  • Sustained breath control across longer note values
  • Pulse and beat awareness through rhythm notation
  • Ensemble balance when holding notes of different durations
