About the Composer: Christine Wolf

Christine Wolf has spent nearly two decades directing bands at Central Davis Junior High in Layton, Utah, where she oversees woodwind, brass, percussion, and jazz ensembles across multiple levels. Beyond the classroom, she has shaped music education policy and mentorship through roles as Past-President of the Utah Bandmasters Association, Advocacy Chair for the Utah Music Educators Association, and President of the Utah Chapter of Women Band Directors International.
Wolf's work as a clinician and conductor has taken her across the country, and her bands have earned recognition including division finalist status for the National Band Association's Blue Ribbon Award. She holds degrees in music education from the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, maintains an active clarinet studio, and co-directs with her husband Heath at major conferences including The Midwest Clinic and Music for All National Concert Band Festival.
Why we love this
Wolf designs this duet around a genuine choreographic challenge that justifies its early intermediate designation. The hand-crossing passages and the dramatic scale exchange between primo and secondo in the middle section transform a straightforward rhythmic study into something visually engaging without sacrificing musical integrity. Audiences respond to the theatrical quality, and students find real satisfaction in mastering the coordination required.
What to expect
Playful and slightly mischievous, with moments of genuine showmanship. The hand crossings give the piece a kinetic energy that feels fresh and modern, while the scale exchange creates a brief sense of collaborative momentum. It sounds more complex than it reads, which is part of its appeal.
Who it's for
Piano duet students who have moved beyond simple note-reading into pieces that demand physical awareness and partnership skills. The early intermediate level assumes secure rhythm reading and basic technique, but the choreographic element makes this rewarding for students developing independence and confidence in ensemble playing.
How to get the most out of it
- Practice the hand crossings slowly with a metronome, focusing on smooth wrist rotation rather than collision. The key is letting each hand lead its own voice rather than fighting for keyboard space.
- Mark the moment where primo and secondo swap places mid-scale. This passage demands eye contact between partners; coordinate the transition together before adding tempo.
- Balance the secondo's scale line so it sings clearly while the primo maintains its supporting material. This is not a accompanimental moment, even though harmonically it reads that way.
- Maintain consistent tempo through the hand-crossing sections. Tempo fluctuations often mask coordination issues rather than solving them.
How to use it
Perfect for a recital where you want to showcase duet playing without retreating to traditional four-hand repertoire. The piece reads as contemporary and clever enough to anchor a student recital or to pair with Baroque or Classical duets that emphasize different textural approaches. At eight pages, it fills a recital slot comfortably without overwhelming an early intermediate program.
