More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has built a remarkable career as one of the most prolific composers of educational piano music in the world. Since 1986, his partnership with Alfred Music Publishing has resulted in over 400 published works and recordings that span all pedagogical levels. Alexander earned his degrees from the University of Kansas and served as piano department chair at the University of Montana for many years, where he taught piano pedagogy, applied piano, and class piano. He made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1987 and has maintained an active performance schedule as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician throughout his career.

Beyond the keyboard, Alexander has been deeply involved in music education advocacy, serving as a former president of the Montana State Music Teachers Association and as a popular clinician at state and national conventions. His commissions and judging work have taken him internationally to Asia, where he has conducted master classes and performed recitals across Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea. He currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he continues to compose and develop materials for Alfred Music Publishing.

Why we love this

Spanish Piano Express editions open your studio to Spanish-speaking families and bilingual communities without sacrificing content quality or pacing. The accelerated framework respects students who come in with strong foundational skills or those who simply need to move faster, while the integrated lesson-theory-technique-performance design keeps teaching focused and time-efficient. The online audio with both solo performances and orchestrated accompaniments transforms practice sessions into engaging musical experiences rather than isolated technical work.

What to expect

These pieces capture the energy and expressiveness that draws young pianists deeper into the instrument. The music balances technical clarity with genuine melodic appeal, so students encounter real musical ideas rather than abstract exercises, building both technique and taste from the very start.

Who it's for

Spanish-speaking students and bilingual learners who benefit from instruction in their primary language, as well as pianists who demonstrate quick grasp of concepts and need a streamlined path through foundational material. Teachers serving Spanish-speaking communities will find this edition essential for effective communication with families about progress and practice expectations.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the online acoustic piano performances before assigning pieces to internalize phrasing, tempo, and character.
  • Use the tempo adjustment software to slow down unfamiliar passages during initial practice, then gradually increase tempo as comfort grows.
  • Play the orchestrated accompaniments while working through performance pieces to understand how your part fits into a larger musical texture.
  • Reference the online audio when discussing interpretation with students, using it as a model for rubato, pedaling, and dynamic shaping rather than as the only correct way to play.

How to use it

Use this as your primary method book for Spanish-speaking students or as an accelerated track for intermediate-beginner learners who have prior musical experience. The integrated structure works equally well in group classes and private lessons, eliminating the need for separate theory or technique supplements.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading treble and bass clef notation in integrated left and right hand contexts
  • Foundational hand position, posture, and basic technique at the keyboard
  • Music theory fundamentals including staff notation, rhythm, intervals, scales, and chord construction
  • Playing with awareness of tempo and dynamics through interpretation of marked performance pieces
  • Listening and rhythmic independence through accompaniment-supported performance
