More about this title

About the Composer: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped elementary piano pedagogy for nearly four decades through his work with Alfred Music Publishing, where his catalog now exceeds 400 compositions and recordings. His influence extends globally as one of the most widely performed educational composers for young pianists, a reach built on his experience teaching piano pedagogy at the University of Montana for 24 years and later at institutions across California.

Beyond the studio and classroom, Alexander maintains an active performance career as soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician. He has collaborated with internationally recognized artists, premiered works at Carnegie Recital Hall, and served as clinician and adjudicator at major music teachers conventions across North America and Asia. Based in Albuquerque, he continues composing while touring for Alfred Music Publishing.

Why we love this

This repertoire book delivers exactly what early piano students need: stylistically varied, genuinely enjoyable pieces that reinforce method concepts without feeling like exercises. Alexander and Mier's arrangements respect the beginner's technical limitations while offering enough musical personality to keep students motivated.

What to expect

Playful and unpretentious. These pieces honor the joy of early discovery without condescension, moving between folk melodies, rhythmic pieces, and character studies that feel like windows into real musical styles rather than watered-down versions of them.

Who it's for

Spanish-speaking piano students at the early elementary level, or programs serving bilingual families where instruction or supplementary materials in Spanish strengthen home practice and family engagement. Teachers using any beginner method can draw from this collection to expand beyond their core materials.

How to get the most out of it

  • Explore the duets early in the learning sequence; they build ensemble listening skills and make the practice process social rather than isolating.
  • Let students choose which style pieces appeal to them most. Ownership over repertoire selection increases practice frequency and retention.
  • Use the variety of styles as a gateway to discussing how the same technical skills apply across different musical traditions and contexts.

How to use it

Assign pieces from this collection as sight-reading warm-ups during group lessons, or pair specific selections with corresponding concepts from your primary method book to reinforce learning. The duets work beautifully in recitals featuring younger students, creating ensemble experiences that solo repertoire cannot.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and playing music in multiple styles and cultural traditions
  • Reading notation with greater confidence and fluency at the early elementary level
  • Ensemble playing and listening (particularly through the duet arrangements)
  • Transferring technical concepts from method work to new repertoire contexts
