More about this title

About the Author: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped piano pedagogy for decades through his work with Alfred Music Publishing, beginning in 1986. With over 400 educational compositions and recordings to his name, he stands among the most widely performed composers of piano music for students across all levels. Alexander served as piano department chair and instructor in applied piano, class piano, and piano pedagogy at the University of Montana for 24 years before relocating to California, where he taught at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. He holds a degree from the University of Kansas and made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1987.

Beyond the studio and classroom, Alexander maintains an active performance schedule as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician, having collaborated with internationally recognized artists. He is a sought-after clinician at state and national music teachers conventions and has judged national competitions as far as India. His work has been commissioned by numerous organizations, and his teaching experience directly informs every piece he writes for students. Alexander currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he continues composing and touring for Alfred Music Publishing.

Why we love this

This book delivers what accelerated students actually need: a unified approach that treats lessons, theory, technique, and performance as integrated skills rather than separate subjects. The authors, led by Dennis Alexander's decades of pedagogical insight, understand that students progressing at this pace benefit from clear explanations and immediate application, not busywork. The online audio pairs acoustic piano models with orchestrated accompaniments, giving students professional-quality sound and motivation that typed recordings simply cannot match.

What to expect

This book strikes a balance between purposeful study and genuine music making. Pieces feel substantial enough to satisfy a growing musician, yet the integrated lesson design means you are always building something concrete rather than completing abstract exercises.

Who it's for

Book 3 serves intermediate piano students (typically grades 3-4) who are progressing rapidly and need a curriculum that keeps pace with their development. Students in this book are ready to engage with more sophisticated harmonic and rhythmic concepts while continuing to build technique and performance confidence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Work through the online accompaniments at slower tempos first, then gradually increase speed as you gain confidence with the piece. The tempo adjustment feature lets you master the music before performing at concert speed.
  • Study the acoustic piano audio performance to hear how phrasing and dynamics shape the piece, then apply those interpretive choices to your own playing rather than copying exactly.
  • Tackle the skills-based units in order; each one builds on concepts from the previous unit, so skipping ahead will create gaps in understanding musical structure.

How to use it

Use Book 3 as the core method for intermediate group piano classes or advanced private lessons where students need faster progression. The performance pieces work beautifully on student recitals, and the online accompaniments allow students to perform with ensemble sound even in solo contexts.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing in multiple keys with increasing harmonic complexity
  • Technique development through focused exercises integrated with repertoire
  • Interpreting musical expression by studying professional acoustic performances
  • Sight-reading fluency in pieces of intermediate difficulty
  • Music theory application in context (identifying chord progressions, analyzing form, understanding modulation)
  • Playing with accompaniment and maintaining rhythmic independence
