About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator who serves as a class piano, piano, and piano pedagogy instructor at California State University, Northridge. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University in 1977, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University in 1979, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1989.
Her career has included faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program, as well as teaching roles at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma. During the early 1980s, she taught class piano and ensemble courses at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk has presented at numerous national conferences including those of the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has co-authored over 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, the couple operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students across all age levels. Based in the Los Angeles area, Dr. Kowalchyk continues her work as both a piano instructor and clinician for Alfred Music.

E. L. Lancaster spent nearly two decades as a music professor at the University of Oklahoma, where he established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy. He also served as adjunct piano faculty at California State University, Northridge, and previously held the position of Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music. His educational background includes degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
During his tenure at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster directed the group piano program and mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertation students in piano pedagogy. He founded and taught in the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which combined group and private instruction for pre-college students. His contributions to the field earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), among other recognitions from the university.
Beyond his teaching career, Dr. Lancaster has held leadership roles in national music organizations, including serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, and as 2020 National Conference Chair. He and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a large independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, from 1981 to 1996. His contributions to music education have been recognized through honors including the Signature Sinfonian Award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (2013) and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Murray State University (2014).
