Jennifer Linn brings three decades of teaching experience to every composition she writes. A concert pianist and conservatory-trained musician, she earned her degrees from the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory, where she won the Concerto-Aria competition and received the Vice Chancellor's award for academic excellence. Her work as Manager of Educational Piano at Hal Leonard LLC (2009-2019) positioned her at the center of piano pedagogy publishing, giving her deep insight into what students actually need to progress.
Linn has composed over 300 original works and arrangements for piano students, all published by major houses including Alfred, G. Schirmer, Hal Leonard, and Music Sales America. She conducts master classes and workshops across the United States, Canada, and India, and continues to teach private studio students of all ages alongside university-level piano pedagogy courses. In 2013, UMKC named her its alumni of the year; in 2020, she received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to music and education.
Why we love this
Linn writes with purpose. This prelude captures genuine musical drama in an accessible form, avoiding the trap of over-simplification that makes many pedagogical pieces forgettable. The title promises something students actually want to play: music that sounds substantial and purposeful without requiring advanced technique.
What to expect
Purposeful and confident, with an underlying sense of determination. The piece conveys emotional weight without relying on heavy technical demands, creating space for students to focus on musicality and expression.
Who it's for
Intermediate piano students ready to play pieces with genuine musical substance, and teachers seeking repertoire that balances technical accessibility with artistic depth. This works equally well for students in private lessons and group piano classes.
How to get the most out of it
Shape the opening gestures with clear intention; even modest dynamic changes will establish the 'brave' character the title suggests
Pay attention to hand independence so the accompaniment pattern remains steady while the melody breathes naturally above it
Find the emotional arc across all three pages rather than treating sections as separate ideas
How to use it
Perfect as a recital piece for students working toward public performance experience, or as a culminating work in a unit on character development in classical forms. The three-page length makes it substantial enough to anchor a student showcase while remaining manageable for rehearsal schedules.
Skills your students will build
Pedal control and awareness
Shaping melodic lines with consistent accompaniment patterns
Building emotional narrative across a longer form
