About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober brings two decades of public school teaching experience together with advanced study in both music education and piano performance. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (graduating summa cum laude) and later completed a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, studying with respected mentors including Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich.

Today, Bober balances her work as a private studio instructor and church pianist with an active presence as a clinician and composer. Her pieces are known for their motivational character and musical substance, and she is a frequent presenter at piano teacher conferences and workshops across North America. Her background in jazz study (with Tony Caramia) and her experience directing church music programs inform her approach to writing music that connects students to both technique and artistry.

Why we love this

Bober's gift for pairing narrative appeal with genuine musical challenge shines here. The piece invites students to think expansively about the keyboard while the prehistoric theme captures imagination, making the work of developing hand independence and wide intervallic leaps feel purposeful rather than mechanical.

What to expect

Stately and processional, like a ceremonial march unfolding in shadow. The minor key and bold character create gravitas; the right hand's wide-ranging melody suggests movement and ritual, while the supporting left hand grounds the piece with dignity and weight.

Who it's for

Early intermediate to intermediate pianists ready to expand their reach across the keyboard and develop stronger hand independence. Students who enjoy narrative or programmatic music will connect with the prehistoric theme, and those building confidence with wider intervallic jumps will find this piece both engaging and approachable.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map out the hand positions and interval leaps in advance, marking any stretches that feel awkward. This preparation means you can focus on tone quality and phrasing when you sit down to practice.
  • Work the right-hand melody against a slow, steady left-hand pulse first. Once the independence feels secure, bring the tempo up gradually and listen for the ceremonial weight the piece demands.
  • Pay attention to dynamics and articulation as mood-setters. The bold character depends on conviction in touch; avoid playing it timidly even at slower tempos.
  • Consider the keyboard geography: a wide-ranging right hand needs secure positioning and confident movement between registers. Practice the full span of the piece to build comfort with those distances.

How to use it

This works beautifully in a recital program themed around animals, nature, or storytelling, where it can anchor a set of character pieces. It also serves well as a repertoire selection for students preparing portfolio pieces or audition material that showcase command of the full keyboard and mature musical interpretation.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand independence between melody and accompaniment
  • Control of wide intervallic leaps and keyboard spanning
  • Stately, sustained tone quality in minor key contexts
  • Understanding of programmatic or narrative music-making
  • Navigation of the full keyboard with confidence and security
