About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began improvising on piano as a young child in northwestern Pennsylvania and continued her training at the Warren Conservatory of Music before earning her B.S. in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia. Early in her career, she taught vocal music in upstate New York and worked with the Yamaha Music School as an instructor, establishing herself as a musician who understands pedagogy across multiple contexts.

A conversation with her brother, songwriter John W. Thompson, led her to Nashville and a career arranging piano transcriptions. Over the decades, she has created more than four hundred solo piano collections, earning recognition from church musicians and students for arrangements that honor both familiar melodies and the player's developing technique. Her work with Alfred Publishing since 2010 reflects her commitment to writing for pianists across all levels, with particular strength in contemporary and blended worship settings.

Why we love this

Tornquist's ear for harmonic color and rhythmic freshness transforms well-known worship songs into pieces that feel both reverent and pianistically engaging. The unified spiritual theme across the three arrangements makes this suite work beautifully as a program unit, whether you're planning a service or building a recital around a central message. These are arrangements that respect the melody while rewarding attentive playing and musical interpretation.

What to expect

These arrangements celebrate the melodic strength of modern worship songs while introducing harmonic sophistication and rhythmic variety. Moving through the three pieces feels like a spiritual journey, with Tornquist's textures shifting to match the emotional arc of each song without ever straying into complexity that obscures the message.

Who it's for

Church pianists preparing music for contemporary or blended worship services, as well as intermediate to early advanced piano students seeking sacred repertoire that combines approachable technique with expressive depth. Musicians who want contemporary Christian songs presented in arrangements that maintain both accessibility and musical substance will find these pieces immediately useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody against the harmonic texture; Tornquist's arrangements often layer complementary lines beneath the tune, so ensure the primary voice projects without burying inner voices.
  • Pay attention to rhythmic precision in the left hand, especially where contemporary gospel rhythms interact with more traditional harmonic movements; this interplay is where the arrangements gain their distinctive character.
  • Use the performance times listed in the score for service planning, and practice transitions between pieces to maintain the spiritual continuity of the suite.

How to use it

Use the complete suite to structure a worship service or a thematic recital segment focused on adoration. The included performance times make service planning straightforward, and the three distinct musical characters allow you to program them consecutively or space them throughout a longer program while maintaining the suite's spiritual cohesion.
