About the Composer: David Lantz III

David Lantz III brings classroom experience and creative ambition to everything he writes. As a full-time vocal music teacher in Pennsylvania, he understands what works in rehearsal and what resonates with singers. His output is staggering: nearly 500 published works spanning sacred and secular choral music, orchestral writing, symphonic band, jazz, and chamber works with major publishers across the country.
Beyond composition, Lantz is an accomplished editor, engraver, and church music director who performs regularly as a bassist and vocalist in pop and jazz settings. He shares his musical life with his wife, composer Marti Lunn Lantz, and their five musically active children in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Why we love this
Lantz writes with the instincts of someone who lives in the choir room. This anthem captures genuine thanksgiving without saccharine sentiment, and the rhythmic energy propels singers through a 2:50 arc that feels purposeful rather than padded. The Choral Instrumental Pak format gives you flexibility to perform with full accompaniment or adapt the configuration to your ensemble's needs.
What to expect
Spirited and forward-moving, with the warmth of genuine devotion. The piece radiates gratitude without sentimentality, building momentum and joy through its accompaniment while the choir affirms the message of blessing and thanksgiving.
Who it's for
This works for any choir celebrating gratitude, harvest, or thanksgiving within a sacred context. The rhythmic voicing and moderate length make it accessible to high school and adult ensembles without sacrificing musical substance.
How to get the most out of it
- Honor the energy marking by maintaining a buoyant tempo throughout; resist the urge to drag the opening even when establishing the harmonic foundation.
- Balance the choir's text delivery against the instrumental independence, especially where the accompaniment carries rhythmic momentum beneath sustained choral phrases.
- Allow the rhythm section to anchor younger singers who may struggle with syncopation or driving rhythmic figures; this piece rewards rhythmic confidence.
How to use it
Open a Thanksgiving service with this or use it as a peak moment in a mixed-sacred program where you need brightness and congregational warmth without extended length. It pairs well before or after quieter, more reflective anthems that might dominate the middle of a service.
Skills your students will build
- Singing against rhythmic independence in the accompaniment
- Maintaining rhythmic integrity in contemporary harmonic settings
- Text clarity and expression within energetic tempos
- Ensemble cohesion when instruments carry driving pulse
