About the Composer: Kirt Mosier

Kirt Mosier

Kirt Mosier conducts and composes with equal fluency, bringing an infectious energy to every project he touches. His work has taken him across the globe, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, from Vienna to Seoul, and he's earned two national composition awards for "Baltic Dance" and "American Reel." He served as Director of Orchestras in the Lee's Summit and Raytown school districts and currently leads the Youth Symphony of Kansas City while holding the position of associate conductor with the Lee's Summit Symphony.

Beyond the concert hall, Mosier has shaped music education in unexpected ways. He founded the Digital Media Technology program at Summit Technology Academy, where his students have earned national recognition and launched careers in professional music production. His commissions include an original ballet score for the Portland Ballet Company, and his work regularly appears at the Midwest International Clinic in Chicago. A sought-after speaker and mentor, Mosier connects orchestral artistry with genuine joy and humor.

Why we love this

Mosier captures that rare sweet spot where a piece feels alive and urgent without losing its tunefulness. The writing plays to what string players love, soloistic moments that let individuals shine, propulsive rhythms that feel great under the bow, and the kind of modern-meets-Americana vocabulary that resonates with young musicians. At five minutes and forty-five seconds, it's substantial enough for a real program statement but compact enough to rehearse efficiently.

What to expect

Prairie Fire! crackles with restless energy, grounded in the open-air warmth of Americana before igniting into something altogether more modern and electric. The piece moves like kindling catching flame: rhythmically insistent, melodically infectious, and ultimately unstoppable as it races toward its burning conclusion.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 5 level looking for contemporary repertoire with personality and immediate impact. Directors seeking material that engages students through recognizable Americana idioms while introducing them to jazz vocabulary will find this score delivers on both fronts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the driving cello and bass lines as the rhythmic engine of the piece; they ignite everything that follows, so lock that foundation early in rehearsals.
  • Balance the violin and cello solo passages so they sing above the accompaniment without overwhelming the ensemble sound.
  • Build intensity gradually across the final section, resisting the urge to rush; the fiery conclusion lands harder when the approach feels deliberate and controlled.
  • Emphasize the Americana character in the opening theme, letting the melody breathe with a natural swing before the jazz elements intensify the texture.

How to use it

Program this as a concert opener or closer where you want immediate engagement and musical substance without extended thematic development; its focused five-minute-forty-five-second arc fits perfectly into festival competitions or chamber orchestra concerts. It pairs well alongside more traditional string repertoire, offering audiences a vivid contrast in contemporary orchestral voice.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing rhythmic driving sections (cello and bass lines) with melodic material above
  • Executing syncopated rhythms across the entire ensemble
  • Blending Americana idioms with jazz harmonic language
  • Controlling dynamic intensity across an extended climactic section
  • Executing rapid shift from lyrical solo passages to energetic full-orchestra writing
