He appears regularly as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for school and honor choirs throughout the United States and beyond. A tenor vocalist himself, he has directed musical theatre, performed with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir, and served as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992.

Why we love this

Beck brings genuine humor and craft to novelty repertoire, creating something your singers will genuinely enjoy without sacrificing musicianship. The samba groove sits naturally for young voices, and the illustrative vocal stacking (mimicking popcorn kernels popping) gives singers something immediately satisfying to execute and hear.

What to expect

Bright, fizzy, and irresistibly playful, this piece bounces along with the infectious energy of samba rhythms and the whimsical imagery of popcorn kernels exploding. The vocal stacking creates a satisfying texture that feels modern and clever, turning a familiar snack into a legitimate musical moment that makes audiences smile.

Who it's for

Middle and high school choirs seeking accessible, engaging repertoire that connects with contemporary humor and Latin musical styles. Singers benefit from a novelty number that treats them as capable musicians rather than talking down to them, making this ideal for building confidence in younger ensembles or as a crowd-pleasing concert closer.

How to get the most out of it

  • Isolate the popping kernel sections in rehearsal before combining them with the main melody; have different singers explore the varied rhythmic heights so the effect sounds organic rather than forced.
  • Lean into the samba feel by having singers feel the secondary beat; this groove-oriented timing is essential to making the Latin character land with style.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the ensemble into the groove early, then gradually reduce reliance on it so singers develop internal rhythmic confidence.
  • Invite singers to explore the cheesy humor in their tone and phrasing without becoming overly cartoonish; the piece works best when the fun is genuine rather than mocking.

How to use it

Program this as a concert closer or palate cleanser between heavier selections; its buoyant energy and humor provide welcome relief and leave the audience smiling. It works especially well on pops concerts, school assemblies, or informal performance settings where the novelty element enhances rather than undermines the musical experience.
