More about this title

About the Composer: Mary K. Sallee

Mary K. Sallee

Mary K. Sallee brings decades of teaching experience and compositional craft to her work. She earned bachelor's degrees in piano and voice, then completed a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Oklahoma. A Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, she spent a year studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, deepening her artistic foundation before returning to build her own teaching studio.

Since 1986, Sallee has maintained an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, with a focus on adult students. Her compositional output reflects this teaching life; she has published over 60 works, many written specifically for her studio and several recognized by the National Federation of Music Clubs. Beyond composition, she remains active as a workshop clinician, adjudicator, conductor, and festival organizer. She has served the music education community as an OMTA state president and as an MTNA Director, and continues to perform as a church musician, jazz ensemble director, and freelance accompanist.

Why we love this

Sallee writes with genuine understanding of what intermediate pianists can handle and what they need to work toward. The title promises a certain attitude, and the piece delivers musicianship without unnecessary technical roadblocks, making it satisfying both to prepare and to perform.

What to expect

A piece built on confidence and restraint. The title 'Playin' It Cool' captures a musical attitude that feels contemporary and assured without being showy. There's sophistication in its simplicity.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists looking for repertoire that lets them perform with style and maturity. This piece suits students who have moved beyond early-level technical constraints and are ready to focus on interpretation and musicianship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrases with intention rather than relying on pedal to sustain sound; this builds independence between hands and clarifies the musical line.
  • Find the groove early in your practice. The piece's character lives in rhythmic clarity and confident pacing, so lock the pulse before polishing details.
  • Balance texture across both hands so no single line dominates unless the music specifically calls for it; intermediate pianists often rush toward the melody and neglect accompanying voices.

How to use it

This works well on a student recital or studio showcase where you want to highlight poise and contemporary voice. It pairs nicely alongside classical or Baroque repertoire to demonstrate range, or cluster it with other character pieces that celebrate different moods and styles.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining consistent tempo and pulse through rhythmic patterns
  • Balancing multiple voices while keeping each one clear
  • Interpreting style and character through deliberate phrasing rather than pedal reliance
  • Performing with articulation and control at intermediate tempos
