About the Composer: Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan's career reflects deep roots in Virginia music education and band direction. After earning degrees in Music Education from Bridgewater College and a master's degree from James Madison University, he spent 36 years directing bands in Albemarle County before transitioning to university supervision and adjunct teaching in arranging at JMU. His work has reached audiences from the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic to the White House, and he was recognized as Central Virginia's Outstanding Middle School Teacher by the University of Virginia's Phi Delta Kappa chapter.

Fagan remains active as a clinician, adjudicator, and composer for band and string orchestra. He serves as Assistant Director and percussionist with the Charlottesville Band and holds membership in ASCAP, the National Band Association, and Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity. His compositions blend accessibility with musical substance, making them valuable additions to concert and festival programs.

Why we love this

Fagan captures something genuine here: the simple pleasure of a spinning toy becomes an invitation for your band to explore clear, engaging writing without complexity for its own sake. At Grade 2, the piece respects both student musicians and audience members, delivering genuine musical satisfaction in just over three minutes. Directors often struggle to find concert repertoire that feels substantial yet accessible; this one lands squarely in that sweet spot.

What to expect

Pinwheels evokes nostalgia and wonder without sentimentality. The music captures the hypnotic spin of a toy in the wind, balanced between stillness and motion, innocence and craft. Your band will find it both comforting and subtly engaging, a musical memory that lands fresh each time.

Who it's for

This score and parts set works for middle school and early high school bands looking for quality concert or festival repertoire that doesn't require advanced technical demands. It suits directors who want students to experience well-crafted composition without getting bogged down in range extremes or rhythmic complexity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Let the transparent orchestration do the work. With a Grade 2 ensemble, resist the urge to over-conduct or over-balance; the clarity is the point.
  • Shape the melodic lines with natural phrasing rather than mechanical sectional attacks. Even young musicians can project the toy-like simplicity Fagan intends when they understand the emotional content.
  • Use the full duration (3:20) to establish atmosphere. Tempos that rush will sacrifice the meditative quality that makes this piece memorable.

How to use it

Place this early in a concert to set a reflective, accessible tone that draws the audience in. It pairs well with contrasting pieces that are more energetic or technically ambitious, and it works equally well as a festival selection where judges appreciate compositional clarity and age-appropriate writing.

Skills your students will build

  • Ensemble balance and blend in transparent textures
  • Expressive phrasing at moderate tempos
  • Sustained tone production for lyrical passages
  • Responding to conductor gesture with dynamic nuance
