Piano Technic, Level 3: Piano Book

Level 3 introduces students to the building blocks of intermediate technique without overwhelming them. The scope is focused and intentional: triplet patterns, triad inversions, and harmonic minor scales arrive in a sequence that feels natural, and the inclusion of left-hand accompaniment patterns prepares students for the fuller textures they'll encounter in real repertoire.

These studies open up the harmonic vocabulary available to younger pianists. Triad inversions suddenly make chord progressions feel less static, and harmonic minor adds color and sophistication to scales and passages that were previously confined to major keys.

Early intermediate pianists ready to move beyond basic five-finger patterns and simple progressions. Students using the David Carr Glover Piano Library at Level 3 will benefit most, though these studies work well alongside any piano course that moves into harmonic minor and more complex rhythmic figures.

• Approach triplet patterns as a rhythmic conversation between hands. Isolate the triplet figures slowly until they feel as natural as straight eighth notes, then gradually bring the tempo up.
• When working with triad inversions, voice each inversion separately before combining them. Hearing how the bass note changes will deepen understanding of harmonic function.
• Balance tone between melody and accompaniment by thinking in layers. The left-hand sustained patterns should support without overwhelming the right-hand line.

Use Level 3 as the technical foundation during the second or third year of study. Assign studies that align with pieces students are learning concurrently; if a repertoire piece uses left-hand accompaniment patterns, pull a corresponding study from this book to build that specific skill in isolation before applying it to the full piece.
