More about this title

About the Composer: Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner

Janet Gardner studied music education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and spent 33 years teaching elementary general music in Montevideo. Throughout her career, she became a sought-after clinician at state music conventions and universities across the United States and Canada, earning recognition as the 1995 Minnesota Music Classroom Teacher of the Year. She chaired the Minnesota Elementary Composition Contest for six years and received annual ASCAP awards for her compositions.

Gardner's catalog of musicals and choral works, published by Alfred, reflects her deep understanding of what works in the elementary music classroom. Beyond composing, she has remained active as a church musician and community arts advocate in her native Minnesota, continuing to create music after retiring from full-time teaching in 2006.

Why we love this

Phantom of the Music Room delivers the theatrical fun and manageable scope that elementary teachers crave. Gardner knows her audience inside and out, having taught thousands of students herself, so the vocal ranges are sensible, the orchestration works with basic accompaniment, and the story hooks kids immediately.

What to expect

The Phantom of the Music Room reimagines a beloved literary figure in a school setting, blending mystery and humor with an accessible musical score. The story unfolds with charm and just enough theatrical mischief to keep young performers engaged and audiences entertained.

Who it's for

This musical is designed for elementary music classrooms and school performance ensembles in Grades 3 and up. Directors seeking a theatrical experience that doesn't demand extensive pit orchestration or complex staging will find this accessible and rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish clear character voices early in rehearsal. Even if students play multiple roles, consistent characterization in their tone will anchor the audience and clarify the narrative.
  • Layer in simple staging as you finalize the music. Movement doesn't require elaborate sets; a few well-placed props and confident blocking make the difference between reading through a script and performing a show.
  • Use the digital audio as a rehearsal aid, but encourage ensemble independence before performance. Students should be comfortable singing without the track so you can control pacing and respond to live ensemble energy.

How to use it

Schedule this as a spring concert finale or as a standalone assembly performance. The digital audio format makes rehearsal flexible, allowing you to build the show incrementally across a semester without requiring live accompanists during every rehearsal.

Skills your students will build

  • Character interpretation and dramatic storytelling through song
  • Ensemble singing with clear diction in theatrical context
  • Following cues and coordinating vocals with accompaniment audio
  • Confidence performing solo and group passages
