About the Composer: Michael Kamuf

Michael Kamuf earned degrees in Jazz Performance and Music Education from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, followed by a Master of Arts in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. His compositions and arrangements have been heard across the country through ensembles including the Woody Herman and Glenn Miller Orchestras, the USAF Airmen of Note, and the US Navy Commodores, as well as through performances by accomplished soloists such as James Moody, Eddie Daniels, and Sean Jones.
Kamuf spent three decades as an instrumental music educator in Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools, serving for twenty-seven years as Director of Bands and Orchestras and Music Department Chairperson at John T. Baker Middle School. His ensembles consistently earned high ratings at festivals and commissioned numerous works for young concert bands. As an exclusive writer for the Belwin Division of Alfred Music Publishing, Kamuf has over 100 publications in print across jazz, orchestra, and concert band catalogs. He currently leads the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band in the Baltimore and Washington, DC region.
Why we love this
Kamuf's structural choice to build an entire three-movement work around variations of a single theme gives your students a masterclass in compositional development without overwhelming them. The flexibility to perform all three movements, select individual ones, or program them in any order means this piece adapts to your concert needs, your rehearsal timeline, and the specific strengths of your ensemble.
What to expect
This piece moves through distinct emotional and textural territories while maintaining a unified musical identity. Each movement reshapes the core theme into new moods, giving the ensemble the satisfying experience of hearing transformation unfold rather than encountering entirely new material.
Who it's for
Young concert bands at the Grade 2 level looking for repertoire that challenges musicianship without extreme technical demands. Directors seeking a single piece that can function as a complete concert work or as flexible programming units also find this especially useful.
How to get the most out of it
- Map out which movements you'll perform before rehearsals begin. If you're playing all three, identify how the mood shifts between them so your students understand they're exploring one idea from different angles.
- Pay attention to the harmonic colors that distinguish each movement. Even at Grade 2, young musicians can hear and respond to these textural changes if you isolate and highlight them in rehearsal.
- Balance transparency with blend in the varying textures. Kamuf's writing exposes individual lines throughout, so intonation and rhythmic precision matter more than volume.
How to use it
Program all three movements as your opening or closing number for a concert, or use individual movements to anchor different sections of a longer program. The built-in flexibility also makes this valuable for festivals where you want to show varied interpretations of a single compositional idea without learning multiple pieces.
Skills your students will build
- Recognizing and performing thematic variation
- Balancing transparency and blend in exposed harmonic writing
- Shifting articulation and style between contrasting sections
- Listening for harmonic color and textural detail
- Maintaining musical direction across movements with different characters
