About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's career spans five decades of advancing choral music through teaching, conducting, and composition. A DMA graduate in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington with degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University, Shaw has conducted master classes and workshops across North America, Europe, and Australia. He founded and directed the acclaimed COS Vocal Jazz Ensemble at College of the Siskiyous and later directed similar ensembles at Colorado State University and the University of Missouri at Kansas City; he currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University.

Shaw's prolific output of over 2500 choral arrangements and compositions has been performed worldwide and sold nearly 20 million copies, earning him multiple ASCAP awards. His collaborative relationships with vocal jazz legends including Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks have deeply informed his arranging sensibility. A member of Just 4 Kicks, a jazz-focused a cappella ensemble, Shaw brings infectious humor and deep musical knowledge to everything he creates for choral musicians.

Why we love this

Shaw's arrangement captures the elegance of this 1930s standard while making it accessible to SSA ensembles without sacrificing sophistication. The writing demonstrates his gift for balancing jazz-informed harmonies with clear voice leading, so singers learn phrasing and blend naturally while delivering a polished, contemporary sound.

What to expect

Wistful and gently optimistic, this arrangement wraps the vintage melody in lush, jazz-inflected harmonies that feel both nostalgic and contemporary. The SSA voicing creates transparency and warmth without losing the song's subtle emotional depth.

Who it's for

SSA choirs seeking a sophisticated pop/jazz standard that works for groups with varied experience levels. The 11-page arrangement offers enough musical substance to engage advanced singers while remaining performable for younger or developing ensembles.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the harmony movement in the inner voices; Shaw layers the accompaniment with jazz-influenced chromaticism that requires precise intonation and careful blend
  • Shape the melodic line with subtle dynamic contours rather than a single volume level; let the story of the lyrics guide your phrasing choices
  • Consider the recorded accompaniment as a rehearsal tool first, then gradually reduce reliance on it to develop ensemble independence and confidence

How to use it

Pair this with other American standards or jazz selections for a concert focused on the Great American Songbook, or place it as a tonal anchor between more rhythmically driven pop selections. Its moderate difficulty and accessible charm make it ideal for spring or holiday concerts where you want to showcase vocal maturity and musicality.

Skills your students will build

  • Jazz harmony recognition and intonation in extended chords
  • Phrasing interpretation of a classic pop standard
  • Ensemble blend in SSA voicing with chromatic movement
