He taught instrumental music for thirty years with Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where he spent twenty-seven years as Director of Bands and Orchestras and Music Department Chairperson at John T. He currently leads the Mike Kamuf Little Big Band, a jazz octet based in the Baltimore and Washington, DC region.
Why we love this
Kamuf nails the Grade 2 sweet spot by layering enough rhythmic interest and harmonic color to hold ensemble musicians' attention without overwhelming them. The writing balances accessibility with sophistication, making it equally rewarding for students to perform and audiences to hear. Its versatility as either opener or closer, combined with that high-energy drive, gives you a piece that builds festival credibility while keeping the energy alive on the podium.
What to expect
Propulsive and contemporary, with a rhythmic momentum that pulls the listener forward. The melodic ideas flow across the ensemble freely, punctuated by bright accents and underpinned by harmonies that feel fresh and modern. It has the spark of a crowd-pleaser without sacrificing genuine musicality.
Who it's for
Concert bands at the Grade 2 level, whether you're preparing for a festival, assembling a dynamic concert program, or looking for a piece that engages both student musicians and audiences. This score and parts set works equally well for middle school bands and smaller high school ensembles seeking high-energy repertoire with genuine musical substance.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the tempo steady and energetic; the rhythmic drive is the piece's backbone, so let the ensemble lock in before layering the melodic components on top.
- Shape the phrases even as the piece moves quickly, since the conductor score emphasizes phrasing work alongside the contemporary harmonies.
- Balance the melodic lines across the ensemble so punctuated figures don't overshadow the flowing ideas that wind through the band.
How to use it
Open your concert with this piece to establish energy and engagement from the first measure, or close your set with it to send the audience out on a high. It pairs well alongside more lyrical works, serving as a tonal and textural counterpoint that showcases the range of your ensemble's capabilities.
