About the Composer: Jorge L. Vargas

Jorge L. Vargas was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from The University of Texas-San Antonio and Master's in Education from Lamar University. A composer and arranger with deep roots in multiple musical traditions, Vargas has written across concert band, marching band, string orchestra, and mariachi ensemble, with numerous works appearing on state and festival lists.
Vargas has taught at Memorial Junior High in Eagle Pass, Texas, where he directed the concert band and mariachi group while coordinating beginner classes. His compositions have earned recognition on the J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice list and Bandworld Magazine's Top 100, and several have been featured at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. His work reflects a musician's understanding of what engages students across different skill levels and cultural contexts.
Why we love this
Paso Del Aguila succeeds because Vargas writes with clear knowledge of what Grade 2 bands can accomplish when the writing is genuinely musical rather than merely functional. The prominent clarinet writing gives your upper woodwinds meaningful material, while the low brass section gets its own moment to anchor the texture. This is a pasodoble that sounds like it matters.
What to expect
Paso Del Aguila captures the pageantry and controlled energy of a Spanish march. Intricate melodic lines weave through the texture with rhythmic vitality, creating moments of brightness punctuated by deeper harmonic support from the low brass, all delivered in a compact 2:20 timeframe that holds focus.
Who it's for
Grade 2 concert bands seeking repertoire that honors Latin and multicultural traditions while remaining accessible. Directors who want their students to experience authentic musical idioms without sacrificing ensemble playability.
How to get the most out of it
- Isolate the clarinet passages in sectional rehearsals to lock the rhythmic precision these intricate melodies demand; the clarity here sets the tone for ensemble cohesion.
- Balance the low brass feature carefully so that section gains presence without overshadowing the ensemble's overall Spanish character.
- Emphasize the march quality inherent to pasodoble style: steady forward momentum with crisp articulation across the band rather than a sluggish, dragging approach.
How to use it
Program this as a festival or concert selection that expands your students' familiarity with world music traditions. Its manageable length and Grade 2 accessibility make it ideal for mid-season concerts or festival competitions where you want to showcase cultural repertoire without overstretching your band's preparation time.
Skills your students will build
- Reading rhythmic precision within Latin/pasodoble idioms
- Sustaining musical lines with clear articulation and phrasing
- Balancing featured melodic sections (clarinet) with supporting harmonic roles
- Maintaining steady ensemble tempo and groove within a march context
