More about this title

About the Composer: Jorge L. Vargas

Jorge L. Vargas

Jorge L. Vargas was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from The University of Texas-San Antonio followed by a Master's in Education from Lamar University. He has taught at Memorial Junior High in Eagle Pass, TX, where he directs the concert band and mariachi group while coordinating beginner classes.

As a composer and arranger, Vargas writes across multiple ensembles: concert band, marching band, string orchestra, and mariachi. His works have appeared on state and festival lists, earned recognition on the J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice list and Bandworld Magazine's Top 100, and been featured at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

Why we love this

Vargas captures the spirit of the pasodoble form with writing that feels both authentic and immediately accessible to young players. The clarinet emphasis gives second-year bands a chance to showcase their section while the low brass moments create satisfying contrast and keep the full ensemble engaged throughout.

What to expect

Paso Del Aguila sweeps forward with the elegant stride of a Spanish march, full of melodic turns and rhythmic snap. The clarinet writing dances over a solid harmonic foundation, while moments of low brass warmth remind us that every section has something vital to contribute.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands ready to explore Latin music and Spanish march traditions. Directors seeking accessible arrangements that introduce authentic cultural sounds while building clarinets' technical confidence and highlighting ensemble balance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Emphasize the rhythmic drive of the pasodoble by keeping the pulse steady in the accompaniment; a crisp articulation in the low reed and brass sections will anchor the intricate clarinet lines.
  • Balance the clarinet melodies carefully so they sing above the supporting texture without overwhelming the ensemble's sound.
  • Shape the low brass passages with confidence and tone production; these moments are essential to the piece's character and deserve full attention in rehearsal.
  • Use the PerformancePlus+ exercises to isolate the rhythmic and melodic patterns that students find challenging, then integrate them back into full-ensemble context.

How to use it

Program this as part of a Latin music showcase or a concert celebrating diverse musical traditions. The 2:20 duration and Grade 2 accessibility make it ideal for mid-year programming when students have developed confidence but haven't yet tackled advanced repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic clarity in pasodoble meter and style
  • Sustained melodic line playing in clarinet sections
  • Balancing a featured section against full ensemble accompaniment
  • Latin American music interpretation and authentic phrasing
  • Low brass tone production and ensemble contribution beyond bass line
