Designed for beginning level instrumentalists, Partners n' Sidekicks was written for a couple of my former students whose musical energies were contagious. Though both very independent players (a skill that served them well as they progressed), they worked very well together, each challenging the other to be better. So it is with this piece that allows each performer to present the musical line as well as work together (in harmony) as the piece progresses.

Kaisershot captures something real here: the way two players at the same level can push each other forward when the music demands both independence and collaboration. The piece balances solo moments with genuine duet writing, so neither trumpet player sits in an accompanying role. It's rewarding to teach because students see their partner's line as essential, not secondary.
What to expect
The piece alternates between moments where each trumpet stands front and center with its own musical voice and passages where the two players blend in harmony. There's a sense of friendly challenge throughout, with enough rhythmic and melodic interest to keep both performers engaged without overwhelming their reading skills.
Who it's for
Two beginning trumpet students who are ready to handle their own melodic material without constant direction. This works well for players who have basic tone control and can read single-line parts with some rhythmic variety. It's ideal for students who thrive when given ownership of a musical idea.
How to get the most out of it
Establish clear communication about phrasing and dynamic shaping before drilling rhythms. Each player needs to hear where the other is headed, especially in the harmonic sections.
Record yourselves early and often. Hearing back a duet reveals balance issues and ensemble precision gaps that are harder to spot in the moment.
Practice the independent passages separately first. Secure your own line before layering it with your partner's so you both arrive at unison sections with confidence.
How to use it
Slot this into a studio recital or beginning band concert where you want to showcase two promising trumpeters as a team. It also works as a finale to a sectional rehearsal or as a confidence builder before more demanding solo or ensemble assignments.
