Designed for beginning level instrumentalists, Partners n' Sidekicks was written for a couple of my former students whose musical energies were contagious. Though both very independent players (a skill that served them well as they progressed), they worked very well together, each challenging the other to be better. So it is with this piece that allows each performer to present the musical line as well as work together (in harmony) as the piece progresses.

Kaisershot designed this duet with a clear pedagogical purpose: to let beginning horn students shine as soloists while building their ability to listen and blend. The piece respects that young players need space to own the melody before the harmonic demands arrive, making it feel like a genuine collaboration rather than a technical exercise.
What to expect
The piece captures the spirit of friendly competition and collaboration. Each horn gets its moment to step forward with a clear melody, then the two voices weave together as the piece deepens, creating moments of real harmonic beauty that reward careful listening.
Who it's for
Beginning horn students who are ready to play beyond simple unison exercises but still developing their embouchure and range. Duet partners will find this most rewarding when they're at similar technical levels and motivated by friendly musical challenge.
How to get the most out of it
Balance the opening statement of each horn so that both players feel equally heard. Resist the urge to accompany; each line deserves attention from the audience.
When the parts move into harmony, adjust your intonation carefully to lock in with your partner. Sustained notes are your opportunity to lock in together.
Mark the spots where one horn takes the lead and the other supports. These transitions clarify the form and help the audience follow the musical conversation.
How to use it
This works well in a student recital where you want to showcase beginning duo playing without the complexity of mixed instrumentation. It also fits naturally into a brass showcase or chamber music concert where young hornists can perform alongside other student soloists.
Skills your students will build
Playing with independence and confidence as a soloist
Listening and responding to another horn player's tone and phrasing
Balancing melody and harmony within a two-part texture
Reading and executing basic dynamic and articulation markings
Sustaining intonation in longer note values
