About the Composer: Tyler S. Grant

Tyler S. Grant

Tyler S. Grant brings a track record of commissions and publications spanning over a decade, with his concert band and orchestral works regularly appearing on honor ensemble programs and national repertoire lists. His fanfare Panoramic Fanfare won the Dallas Wind Symphony's 2014 "Call for Fanfares" Competition and has since been performed by collegiate and professional ensembles across North America. Grant has clinicked with over 100 school instrumental music programs in more than 15 states and has conducted at venues including The Midwest Clinic and all-state bands in multiple regions.

A University of Alabama graduate in instrumental music education, Grant studied conducting with Randall Coleman and cites Brian Balmages as instrumental to his development as a composer. Beyond composing and arranging, he remains actively engaged in the educational community through guest conducting, clinician work, and contributions to pedagogical publications including Alfred Music's Sound Innovations series.

Why we love this

Grant has restructured his original brass and percussion fanfare specifically for the modern wind band, giving you the drama and momentum of a concert opener without demanding unusual instrumentation or exhausting your ensemble. The Grade 4 level sits in that sweet spot where your players can handle the harmonic complexity while the piece remains accessible to program without lengthy rehearsal investment. Programming a competition-ready opener that your students will enjoy playing makes scheduling your concert season far simpler.

What to expect

Panoramic Landscapes unfolds with resplendent brass colors and driving momentum, painting an expansive sonic landscape that energizes a concert from the downbeat. The rescored wind band arrangement amplifies harmonic warmth and textural depth while preserving the fanfare's ceremonial character and forward propulsion.

Who it's for

Band directors seeking a Grade 4 concert opener that commands attention without overwhelming their ensemble. This piece works equally well for mid-level school bands and college ensembles looking for a bright, accessible seasonal opener.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the tempo early in sectionals and lock it with your rhythm section before running full ensemble; the expansive harmonic writing depends on rock-solid pulse.
  • Balance the rescored voicings by checking that no single section drowns out the harmonic colors Grant added for wind band. Mark your dynamic boundaries in each part during preparation.
  • Use the three-minute runtime to your advantage by keeping the energy steady from top to bottom; avoid the temptation to surge dynamically in ways that might obscure the fanfare's structural arc.

How to use it

Open your concert with this piece to set a confident, polished tone immediately. Its three-minute length and accessible Grade 4 difficulty make it an ideal vehicle for kickoff festivals or competitions where you want to demonstrate ensemble musicality without burning rehearsal time on technical hurdles.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing harmonic voicings across expanded wind instrumentation
  • Maintaining steady tempo and pulse through continuous rhythmic motion
  • Executing dynamic control in fanfare-style writing
  • Reading complex harmonic progressions at concert tempo
  • Ensemble blend in fortissimo passages with sustained sonorities
