He founded the first successful college accordion program at the University of Houston, where he taught for 18 years, and later became recognized worldwide as an authority on Baroque ornamentation and performance practice. He earned his Doctor of Music degree in 1983 and served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years.
