About the Author: Willard A. Palmer

Willard A. Palmer built a prolific career as a composer, pedagogue, and accordion advocate, producing 789 published works spanning methods, solos, and choral literature that have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Early on, he emerged as a child prodigy, performing piano on radio at age 13 and later studying at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a two-year scholarship. Palmer taught accordion at the University of Houston for 18 years, establishing the first successful college accordion program, and served for many years as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston.

Beyond his accordion and piano methods, Palmer distinguished himself as a scholar of Baroque music and ornamentation, becoming internationally recognized in that field. His research shaped the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He held memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and ASCAP, and served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. In 1971 and 1983, he received Doctor of Humanities and Doctor of Music degrees in recognition of his contributions to musicological research.
