About the Composer: James D. Ployhar
James D. Ployhar has established himself as a prolific voice in music education, with more than 800 published compositions spanning multiple genres and ensembles. Beyond his output as a composer, he authored the Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music and adopted in classrooms and conservatories across Norway, France, and English-speaking countries. His formal training includes degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, with graduate composition study at California State University-Long Beach under Morris Hutchings Ruger.
Ployhar's pedagogical influence extends through nearly two decades of public school teaching and extensive work as a clinician and conductor at the college and university level. He has studied orchestration with Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, experience that clearly shaped his distinctive approach to instrumental color and arrangement. His music has received broadcast performance on network television and international performances throughout Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim. Among his many recognitions, he received the National Band Association Citation of Excellence and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Valley City State University, and served as a member of the American Bandmasters Association.
