About the Arranger: Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle

Carrie Lane Gruselle earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire and her Master of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, where she specialized in the Suzuki method. She teaches elementary and middle school strings in the Appleton Area School District and maintains a cello studio through the Lawrence University Arts Academy in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Why we love this

Gruselle's arrangement honors the melody while building genuine musicianship through inventive inner voices that reward careful listening from every section. At Grade 3, it sits at the sweet spot where students can access a recognizable, beloved tune while tackling real harmonic and textural depth. The writing feels orchestral without being overwhelming.

What to expect

The Skye Boat Song emerges with warmth and gentle majesty, its familiar melody supported by flowing harmonies that evoke the windswept Scottish Hebrides. The arrangement creates space for reflection without sacrificing momentum, inviting listeners into a landscape both intimate and expansive.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the Grade 3 level seeking repertoire with genuine educational substance and immediate appeal. This arrangement works equally well for school orchestras preparing for contests or festivals and for programs aiming to deepen students' connection to folk traditions and world music.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully in rehearsal; mark these lines in your parts so violins II, violas, and cellos understand they're not accompanying but actively shaping the harmony and texture.
  • Let the melody breathe. The Skye Boat Song doesn't need rhythmic urgency; allow space for the Celtic character to emerge naturally.
  • Work the section transitions cleanly. With 62 pages of score, establishing clear cues and section entries prevents the momentum from stalling.

How to use it

Feature this as a ballad in a concert celebrating folk music across cultures, where its Celtic roots spark conversation about arrangement and orchestration. It pairs naturally with other traditional music selections and provides a refreshing contrast to classical masterworks or contemporary pieces on the same program.

Skills your students will build

  • Supporting and shaping ensemble sound through inner voice independence
  • Balancing melody and harmony across multiple string sections
  • Sustaining tone and phrasing in lyrical, song-like contexts
  • Reading and interpreting folk melody with historical and cultural awareness
