Description
Perfect partner song format. 2-part choirs can't go wrong when two singable melodies combine and compliment each other like this. Sing the familiar tune the first time, the lilting new melody the second, put them together and you're ready to go! A wonderful wintertime selection. Don't miss the galloping hooves and horse whinnies on the festive SoundTrax CD.

About the Arranger: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck leads Alfred Music's choral publications department and has established himself as one of the most performed choral arrangers in the country, with over 450 works for singers of all ages. His output spans secular choral octavos, vocal pedagogies like Sing at First Sight and Vocalize!, and full-length musicals, all built on a foundation of music education training from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond the page, Beck remains active as a tenor, guest conductor, and clinician working with state honor choirs and all-state ensembles across the Southeast. His sustained involvement in both musical theatre and chamber singing keeps his arranging rooted in what actually works for singers in rehearsal and performance.

Why we love this

Beck has a gift for writing partner songs that sit comfortably in young singers' voices while maintaining genuine musical interest. The partner song structure here gives you built-in rehearsal payoff: singers learn a familiar melody, discover how a new tune interlocks with it, and experience the satisfaction of two-part harmony without the early struggles that can discourage developing choirs.

What to expect

Crisp and energetic with a hint of nostalgia. The familiar tune grounds singers while the new melody adds lift and movement. The SoundTrax accompaniment brings festive holiday warmth with those details (hooves, whinnies) that make singers smile during rehearsal.

Who it's for

Two-part choirs preparing for fall concerts or Thanksgiving programs. This works particularly well for middle school, early high school, or community choirs building confidence in part-singing and harmonic awareness.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two melodic lines during the combination section by having each voice part lead their own phrase clearly before blending.
  • Use the SoundTrax recording in early rehearsals to establish the tune and get singers comfortable with the harmonic context before removing the accompaniment.
  • Shape the familiar melody expressively the first time through so the contrast with the new partner melody becomes more striking when it enters.

How to use it

Perfect as a mid-concert selection that gives your developing singers a chance to shine without overextending their range or endurance. The Thanksgiving and winter themes make it ideal for November through December programming, and its upbeat character pairs well sandwiched between slower, more serious selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing two independent melodic lines simultaneously
  • Recognizing and maintaining a melody while hearing a contrasting part
  • Building confidence in two-part harmony through a familiar entry point
  • Responding to cues in a recorded accompaniment
