About the Artist: Buddy De Franco
Buddy De Franco was a clarinet virtuoso whose technical brilliance and warm tone made him one of jazz's most respected reed players. Active from the 1940s through the 2000s, he led his own ensembles, recorded prolifically across multiple decades, and became known for his ability to navigate both swing standards and bebop innovations with equal facility.
Why we love this
Stitzel's arrangement strips away complexity without sacrificing sophistication. The upper and lower voice interplay keeps the ensemble engaged throughout, the solo opportunities give your section leaders a chance to shine, and the medium swing tempo sits in the pocket where young players can actually swing rather than rush.
What to expect
A buoyant, conversational swing that never feels hurried. The back-and-forth dialogue between the upper and lower sections creates forward momentum and keeps the energy centered rather than scattered.
Who it's for
Grade 4 ensembles with developing swing feel and at least one capable trumpet and tenor sax soloist. The divided voicing works especially well for groups still building confidence in articulation and phrasing.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the trumpet and tenor sax solos against the ensemble so the rhythm section remains locked underneath. Students will naturally want to lift when the soloist enters; resist it.
- Work the phrase trading between upper and lower voices as a call-and-response drill before running the full arrangement. This builds listening skills and prevents the ensemble from losing cohesion during the exchanges.
- Spend rehearsal time on your section leaders' solo passages. These moments are where students personalize the arrangement and show growth as improvisers.
How to use it
Pair this with other medium-swing standards to build a cohesive set that showcases your ensemble's range without overwhelming rehearsal time. It works well mid-concert, after an opener, when the ensemble has warmed up but before heavier or more contemporary charts.
Skills your students will build
- Swing articulation and phrasing in ensemble context
- Listening and responding to sectional call-and-response
- Trading phrases while maintaining rhythmic continuity
- Fundamental improvisation (trumpet and tenor sax solos)
- Dynamic balance between soloist and ensemble support
