About the Arranger: Alice Parker
Alice Parker's career spanned decades of deep engagement with American vocal music. After studying composition and conducting at Smith College and Juilliard, she developed a celebrated partnership with Robert Shaw that produced hundreds of arrangements of folksongs, hymns, and spirituals still performed by choruses worldwide.
Parker's influence extended far beyond the rehearsal room. She founded Melodious Accord in 1985 to center her work on melody itself, publishing essential resources on choral improvisation, congregational singing, and church music. Her honors include the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association, the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal, and six honorary doctorates. She served as the first Director Laureate of Chorus America and was recognized as Distinguished Composer of the Year by the American Guild of Organists.
